The Highs and Higher Highs of Megan Thee Stallion's Time on 'Are You A Charlotte?'
“Carrie will literally go set New York on fire and then come back and type about it at the end of the day like half of it wasn’t her fault.”
No drug can achieve the highs that I felt listening to Megan Thee Stallion’s… I was gonna call it an “appearance,” but really it’s a steamrolling (complimentary) of a recent episode of Kristin Davis’s Are You A Charlotte? — a podcast that bills itself as “much more than just rewatching the beloved Sex and the City,” but like Lady Gaga’s Artpop, could mean anything in that some episodes are recaps and some go broad. But what Megan Thee Stallion brought to her appearance was an unfilteredness that at times delighted and at other times left Davis tongue-tied in the most entertaining way.
Davis calls Megan her dream guest, and it makes sense as to why. Last October, Megan appeared on The Tonight Show. “Nobody told me Sex and the City was this good,” she told Jimmy Fallon.
“I don’t even know how I stumbled upon it, I think I just kept seeing pictures of Sarah Jessica looking pretty as fuck.”
She then proceeded to give her thoughts on each character. Samantha: “She is me. I’m her… she runs men, she does not let men run her.” Charlotte: “My girl. A little delulu, but it’s cute. She would be my bestie.” Miranda: “This is the worst character on the show. She never got anything good to say. She’s so sad all the time.” Carrie: “She’s nuts! She’s always attractive, doing these sicko things. She literally wake up and figure out ‘how can I be my cutest messing up everybody’s day?’”
That conversation portended Megan and Davis’s time together.
Kristin: You’re ready.
Megan: I’m here.
Kristin: You were born ready.
Megan: [Gesturing to her outfit] I put this on for you!
Kristin: Honey, I love it. Meow for me.
Megan: I love your skirt. I love the whole look.
Kristin: This is my skirt I wore when I met Trey.
Megan: Come on Trey!
Kristin: This is the actual skirt when I fell in the street, do you remember?
Megan: I’m really gagging because, like, you look exactly the same.
Kristin: Thank you so much!
Megan: And you act exactly the same.
Kristin: I do, kind of, I know. Don’t tell anyone!
Don’t tell anyone what exactly? We’ll never know. What’s certain in this and so many episodes of the podcast is that the distance between Kristin and Charlotte feels to be a bit of a short one. “This is the skirt I wore when I met Trey.” “When I fell in the street.” This makes for an especially fun listening experience when interpreted as a podcast episode between Charlotte York and Megan Thee Stallion, a listening experience you don’t have to use much imagination to process. It’s made even more entertaining by Megan’s disdain for Carrie and Miranda, Charlotte’s two best friends, and her love for Samantha, a character Davis has tried in recent days to retroactively distance her character from.
Below, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite moments from the podcast.
