That Met Gala Selfie!
A coven of pop’s finest has me wondering who among them we need a collaboration from most.
The Met Gala selfie has become something of a thing, despite efforts to the contrary. It began in 2013 when Derek Blasberg snapped a photo of himself alongside Miley Cyrus, Karen Elson, Emma Roberts, Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora.
“Fun fact: That selfie was taken on an actual digital camera, before iPhone had its front-facing lens and before Vogue started pointedly discouraging guests from taking pictures at dinner,” Blasberg tells me over text.
“I love this shot and am honored by its place in Met Gala history. I should also mention the theme was Punk and I never had a neck tat!”
A year later, Stella McCartney snapped one with her, Rihanna and the late Bill Cunningham.
But it really became a thing in 2016 when Joan Smalls snapped a photo of her along with Lily-Rose Depp, Stella Maxwell, Joan Smalls, Lily Aldridge, Doutzen Kroes and Hailey Bieber (with an unwitting appearance by Lady Gaga in the background) in the bathroom.
A year later, Kylie Jenner spearheaded her own effort, recruiting A$AP Rocky, Frank Ocean, Ashton Sanders, Luka Sabbat, Kendall Jenner, Paris Jackson, Kim Kardashian, Lily Aldridge, P. D*ddy, Slick Woods, Brie Larson and Elizabeth Chambers for a snap.
This year, we were treated to a number of selfies. There was a bathroom snap courtesy of Laura Harrier featuring Zac Posen, Keith Powers, Sarah Snook, Monica Barbaro, Ego Nwodim, LaKeith Stanfield, Justice Smith and Andrew Scott.
And then there was Questlove, who managed to get Colman Domingo, Quinta Brunson, Lewis Hamilton, Tracee Ellis Ross and Cynthia Erivo amongst many others in his snap.
But the one that has me truly dizzy is a shot courtesy of Stella McCartney featuring Madonna, Charli XCX, Lorde and Chappell Roan.
