More Celebrities (A-List, Preferably) Need to Feud
… if it gets us a resolution as satisfying as Madonna vs. Elton.
We used to be a society, in that celebrities used to openly feud. Olivia de Havilland vs. Joan Fontaine. Debbie Reynolds vs. Elizabeth Taylor. Liam vs. Noel Gallagher. Rihanna vs. Ciara. Julia Roberts vs. Vera Steimberg. Azealia Banks vs. Lana Del Rey. The last great modern celebrity feud to play out in the public arena, in my estimation, was the fallout between Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. (I don’t count Olivia Wilde vs. Florence Pugh since it was all based on rumor and we never got any kind of statement from either.) It’s not that we don’t get celebrity feuds these days, but they tend to be reserved for a lower tier of celebrity who stands to benefit from the publicity, vs. a time when the need to be petty clouded all other rational thought. But rarer than the celebrity feud these days is the celebrity feud mending of the fences (see: Tyra vs. Naomi as a great example of this).
Epitomized via Rick Hatchett’s storyline on Season 3 of The White Lotus, human beings hold onto their past — so much so, in some instances, that it can consume their present, or in some cases, their inability to navigate the future. But in other instances, like with Madonna vs. Elton John, the burying of the hatchet years — or in their instance, decades — later can provide a framework for how to not only move on, but mend. And within that, an applicable lesson on the power of forgiveness.
Wait, Madonna and Elton John were feuding? I had that same thought. Let’s explore!
