There are some quotes that just stick. Among the pantheon:
“I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself.”
“I don’t want somebody in my house.”
“I really love my job, but I don’t want to do it that often.”
“I’ll do anything. I’m a bit of a slut that way.”
“So sorry I’m rich. So sorry I’m married to a movie star. So sorry I’m not so bad looking.”
Well, folks, we’ve got a new entry thanks to a recent appearance by my favorite on-screen weeper, John Corbett, on the Fly on the Wall podcast:
“I picked the fucking wrong thing to do with my life.”
Evoking Valerie Cherish by throwing the “fucks” around with six total in his 62-second monologue (I wanted to say diatribe, but it doesn’t feel bitter so much as it does honest), the actor of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Sex and the City and United States of Tara fame laments about what he feels is ultimately a “boring fucking life.” It’s not a searing indictment of Hollywood so much as it is an honest admission of a reality that I would bet many feel as they look back on their chosen vocation, one born out of passion, and wonder: Was it worth it?
[Cue Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is”]
It’s a quote that’s reverberated through my mind, forcing my thumb and index finger to make the kind of silent clack seen by Chappell Roan when she said “there’s gay people here” during her recent appearance on The Tonight Show. But what was it, I wondered, about this gloomy admission that had me so compelled? Let’s review what he said and unpack.
